According to Las Cruces Sun-News, Hatch Police officer Jose Chavez, 33, was shot during a traffic stop after pulling over a grey Lexus at 3:41 p.m. Friday. Its owner was shot during the carjacking, and was transported to the hospital, the sheriff’s department said.
Police said Hanes pulled the trigger and was driving with James Nelson, 36, who was also wanted for the murder in Ohio.
Chavez, 33, was shot in the neck and died at University Medical Center in El Paso, Texas.
The 36-year-old was with two other men in a silver Lexus police believe was stolen when Chavez pulled them over.
Chaves had just arrived at the traffic stop when the suspect got out of the auto and fired shots. Officials did not immediately know how the men had made it there, The Albuquerque Journal reported. The newspaper said another man, James D. Nelson II, is also wanted in Timmons’ death and was also arrested with Hanes in New Mexico.
A third suspect, 24-year-old Whitney Kuhn of Bourneville was arrested at the time of the murder and charged with complicity to aggravated robbery and complicity to aggravated burglary.
Police officers and state employees prevent drivers from entering Hatch, N.M., after a shooting on Friday, Aug. 12, 2016. The suspect had a gunshot wound in his right thigh that appeared to be self-inflicted, she said.
The other Hatch officer returned fire at the gunman’s auto, a silver Lexus, which fled the scene. “The suspect was unable to control that vehicle, and it crashed into a pile of wood and came to rest”, she said.
Nelson and Hane are wanted in OH in connection with the fatal shooting of a 62-year-old man on July 25, The Chillicothe Gazette reported.

Hanes has an extensive criminal history in OH, including involuntary manslaughter and robbery convictions. Raleigh police said they responded to reports that shots were fired inside Crabtree Valley Mall about 2:30 p.m.
