According to HCSO Col. Donna Lusczynski, Dep. Scott Ranney suffered non-life threatening injuries when he was shot in the left thigh just after 12:30 a.m. outside a duplex in the 9400 block of Greystone Road. Deputies returned fire at the suspect.
Ranney, 42, was treated and released from Tampa General Hospital.
A perimeter was quickly set up in the Thonotosassa neighborhood and K-9 units and helicopters were searching for the man suspected of shooting at the deputies. They are not sure if the suspect was shot. The roads in the area are blocked off. Deputies say they expect to have the area secured until daylight to process the crime scene. Deputies said the gunman is believed to be armed and unsafe. He has been employed by the sheriff’s office since July 2009. Investigators ask people in the area to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity they see. K9, foot patrol deputies and aviation are all lending hand in the manhunt.
