Head of the Charles Kicks Off in Boston

A coach calls out to her from a motorboat that’s keeping pace. It was with a mix of excitement and sadness the team learned that it would have a new coach for the 2015 season. “We are really looking forward to it”.

Sharing similar sentiments, the team welcomed Schwegman into the program community. After racing for Georgia Tech from 2000 to 2005, she eventually became vice president of Georgia Tech Rowing.

Thousands of athletes and spectators have poured into Boston for the 51st annual Head of the Charles regatta. Racing begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. both days.

So if you see an older man walking around in a tattered jacket that he’s squeezed himself into this weekend, say congrats. D’Arcy MacMahon, Howard McIntyre and Jack Vincent, all members of the Cambridge Boat Club, started the regatta in 1965 on the advice of former Harvard sculling instructor Ernest Arlett.

This diversity of experience has bred a unique coaching style. “We wore our long underwear and we are ready to go”.

“We didn’t qualify both boats for next year’s event but we were only about one place and a few second shy with our second boat”, said Davis.

Right now, however, the focus is exclusively on the upcoming weekend.

Spectators are encouraged to use public transportation; the closest MBTA stations are Harvard Square (via Red Line and bus) to access the Cambridge side of the river and Boston University West (via Green Line) to access the Boston side of the River.

Next up, Alabama will have two weeks free from competition before concluding its fall season in Chattanooga, Tenn., at the Head of the Hooch Regatta on November 7-8.
