There have not been any cases reported in the St. Joseph area this year, but doctors say people should still be cautious when they head outdoors. Ground sprays have previously been conducted in Ventnor, Margate, Hammonton and Northfield.
The North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) has partnered with the mother of a woman who has died due to West Nile virus in order to increase awareness about the virus. One death has been reported in Attala County.
Symptoms of West Nile virus infection are often mild and may include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, a rash, muscle weakness or swollen lymph nodes.
The man tested positive for the mosquito-borne virus after he was “hospitalized with viral meningitis”, the DOH said.
Mr. Cwalina said people should not have standing water in buckets, pots, tires or pools in yards, where mosquitoes breed. Crows and certain other birds are particularly susceptible to the virus and may indicate the presence of the disease in a specific area.
