Heat Alert: San Diego under Red Flag warning

An intense summer heat wave kept the San Diego area sweltering for a fourth straight day Tuesday, heightening wildfire risks in mountain and desert communities.

A cluster of thunderstorms is moving through Berks, Lehigh and Northampton counties in Pennsylvania as of 5:30 p.m., prompting warnings in those counties, said Joe Miketta, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s regional forecast office in Mount Holly. The NWS also says a significant amount of cloud-to-ground lightning is expected, and lighting can occur as far as 10 miles out around a storm.

A fire danger warning in Southern California. The storms could continue until 7 p.m., the weather service said. Temperatures into the triple digits are expected across the Antelope, Santa Clarita and San Fernando valleys as well as in the foothills and the San Gabriel Mountains at lower elevations. Any individuals using auto as asked to remain aware of how hot cars can become and to supervise younger children and pets inside hot vehicles at all times. People with heart disease, asthma or other respiratory diseases who live or work in high-heat areas are especially urged to minimize outdoor activities.

The hot, humid, unpleasant conditions that have gripped much of the Buffalo Niagara region will be swept away by a cold front today.

Philadelphia has seen six straight days of 90-plus temperatures, with Tuesday nearly certain to be the seventh.

The high might hit 90 again Thursday, which should be partly sunny.
