A majority of the central states can expect heat indices – a combination of temperature and humidity – to range from 100 to 115 degrees.
Highs are in the lower to middle 90s.
Heat is typically the leading cause of weather-related deaths each year.
To keep pets safe in a heat crisis, the American Red Cross says it is important to provide plenty of fresh water and not to leave animals in a vehicle or in the back of a truck.
San Diegans were advised to avoid potentially serious heat-related ailments by staying well-hydrated, avoiding unnecessary outdoor labor and wearing lightweight, loose clothing.
Some of the warmest temperatures will hit this Friday and Saturday with a high of 92 and a heat index near 100 degrees.
“Precautionary/preparedness actions…an excessive heat warning means that a prolonged period of dangerously hot temperatures and high humidity will occur”. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Drink plenty of fluids.
“We’re also encouraging people to check in on their friends and neighbors who don’t have air conditioning or who live alone”, Red Cross chief executive officer Cindy Erickson said in a statement.
The Heat Index is a measure of how it really feels when relative humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature. Heat stroke is marked by a high body temperature, no sweating and a rapid pulse.
It’s really hot in most of the mainland United States right now. Little relief is expected at night, with lows only in the mid to upper 70s. Spotty storms are possible tomorrow afternoon and a better chance for a few stronger storms on Friday.
