Heathrow fraud probe triggers airside pass inquiry

Around 70,000 staff are employed at the airport and many of them are understood to have the security passes.

The pair were taken into custody at a west London police station and were bailed to return to the station in late November. “But the real issue is the threat in terms of airport security; this is a potential serious breach for Heathrow Airport”.

It is thought lax airport security was to blame for a bomb making its way onto a Russian airliner flying from Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt past year.

The Department for Transport said: “We are aware of this issue”.

Scotland Yard said they had been arrested on suspicion of fraud and money laundering as part of an ongoing investigation.

Even with the passes, such employees are subject to the same metal-detector security checks as passengers.

Heathrow has stated it has “taken appropriate action” against the alleged airport workers while the investigation is ongoing. “Other matters have come to light during the inquiries and form part of the ongoing investigation”.
