Heavily armed pair kill 14 in California centre shooting

Authorities say the woman who helped her husband kill 14 people a banquet at a social service center in Southern California had a Pakistani passport and came to the US on a fiancee visa.

NBC News quotes a man identified only as Jim, a sales person at nearby Structural Material Company, as saying, “There’s plenty of police activity, a lady ran into our bathroom and said somebody was shooting there”.

A person by the name of Syed Farook was listed on county documents as an employee of the San Bernardino County Environmental Health Department. And, for believers, prayer should be a constant accompaniment when fighting moral battles, which is likely the reason the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops repeatedly offered its prayers to the families of 2012’s Sandy Hook shooting, while at the same time declaring, quite plainly, that “with regard to the regulation of fire arms…simply put, guns are too easily accessible”. And I think so many Americans sometimes feel as if there’s nothing we can do about it. We are fortunate to have an extraordinary combination of law enforcement and intelligence and military that work every single day to keep us safe.

Police had originally sought as many as three attackers, but Burguan said he was “reasonably confident at this point that we have two shooters and we have two suspects who’re deceased”.

The police chief said he knew of no possible motive for the attack. Ten were sent to hospital in critical condition, and three in serious condition, fire chief Tom Hannemann said.

“I do recall in the Boston bombing that they threw devices, explosive devices at the police as they were being pursued”, Davis said. Farook did not have a criminal record, Burguan said.

Police also found multiple explosive devices at the scene and law enforcement told the Los Angeles Times that pipe bombs had been thrown out of the SUV during police pursuit.

At a Shell gas station about a block from the shooting site, store manager Ana Fuentes says she hasn’t gotten any instructions to stay inside but customers have told her about shootings at the Inland Regional Center.

Hussam Ayloush, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Los Angeles, said the couple had been married for two years and “had a good life”.

President Barack Obama urged the country to take steps to reduce mass shootings, including stricter gun laws and stronger background checks.

A tip led police to a Redlands, California residence where the two shooters lived – prompting Farook and Malik to flee the home in their sport utility vehicle.

Authorities say Syed Farook and his wife or fiancee killed 14 people at a social service center Wednesday before dying in a gunbattle with police. He had worked there for five years.

Cruz later warned of “the gathering storm of homicidal maniacs who tell us they want to kill us”, calling for the U.S.to stomp out ISIS.

“I have no idea why he [Farook] would do something like this”. His interests included “read[ing] religios [sic] books” and “just hang[ing] out in back yard doing target pratice [sic] with younger sister and friends”.

“I’ll take a bullet before you, that’s for damn sure”, he says.

As far as trying to figure out a motive, much of the attention so far has been placed on Farook, an American citizen born in Chicago, Illinois. The FBI, now in charge of the investigation, is exploring whether the shooting is a terrorist incident.
