Heavily Holiday Travel Expected

Automobile travel is again expected to overwhelmingly be the favorite mode of transportation by travelers this Labor Day, with the most popular vacation destinations expected to be Virginia Beach, Myrtle Beach and the Outer Banks, according to AAA.

The national AAA organization past year discontinued travel estimates for the Labor Day holiday, concluding it is the least popular travel period of all the major USA holidays.

Nation wide, 35.5 million people will travel this weekend, and with so many motorists on the road, AAA says it’s more important than ever to drive smart, and drive defensively. The national average price for regular unleaded gasoline has increased for 14 consecutive days, with today’s average price of $2.22 per gallon marking an increase of six cents per gallon, compared to one week ago, and eight cents per gallon compared to one month ago, according to AAA.

The National Safety Council estimated traffic deaths are 9 percent higher during the first six months of 2016 compared to past year, AAA said.

AAA’s Tipsy Tow service will also be available over the holiday weekend to help keep motorists safe.

Even if you’re among the growing number of people who elect to stay home this Labor Day weekend, don’t forget to take basic precautions to ensure you travel safely and protect yourself from others who might not be. Rather, AAA has focused on teen driver safety, auto technology and distracted driving.
