Panview offers an alternative angle on China and the rest of the world through the analyses and opinions of experts. X The smog worsened in north China on Monday and the meteorological center upgraded its alert from yellow to orange, the second most serious level. The statistic shows a distribution of air quality in Beijing based on the PM2.5 Air Quality Index (AQI) between April 2008 and June 2015.
In addition, the PM2.5 found in the air has reached 945 micrograms per cubic meter in southern Beijing, posing a risky threat to the health of residents.
In total, 23 cities in China are choked with smog at the moment, in addition to Beijing.
The levels of smog are quite literally off the charts. When the excessive power use for heating combined with stagnant high pressure, Beijing’s air quality took a nose-dive. Authorities said they only avoided issuing the highest-level alert because conditions were forecast to improve by Wednesday.
To start with, China produces 30 percent of the planet’s greenhouse gases.
Pollution in Beijing is notoriously bad, but Leavenworth says the past five days have been “dispiriting”.
Liu Juntang, a businessman whose company develops environmental technology, said face masks could not give protection from the tiny pollutants on days of extremely heavy pollution.
Power demand soared due to unusually cold weather in November. Coupled with traffic fumes and lack of wind, the city is at a “hazardous” level according to the United States embassy’s monitoring bod.
Beijings No. 2 Experimental Primary School told students they could study from home if they wanted, and Beijing Digital School is running classes online, Chinas state-run Xinhua News Agency reported.
“I felt like my lungs were blocked”.
As the heavy air pollution entered its fifth day in Beijing – far exceeding the 72-hour standard to issue a red alert – the public and media began to raise doubts over the authorities’ pollution control efforts.
For the time being, highways have been closed, construction suspended, and school activities canceled.
The Bureau has also stated that the number of Chinese cities which are affected by major pollution, just like Beijing has reached 23.
Smog has shrouded much of northern China including Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Henan, Shandong, Shanxi and Shaanxi.
