Heavy rains continue to lash Rayalaseema, coastal districts in AP

Vijayawada: Six persons were killed in rain-related incidents in Andhra Pradesh as heavy rains triggered by north east monsoon continued to lash several districts in the state.

Naidu said two National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) helicopters from Chennai have arrived in Chittoor and Nellore districts to rescue people stranded in flood waters.

The well-marked low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal that has been giving heavy to very heavy rain over Tamil Nadu including Chennai has now moved towards coastal parts of Andhra Pradesh.

Yesterday, in a separate incident, four children died when roof of an old building collapsed at Boyapalli in Sambepalli mandal.

The children were playing in the disused house.

In a teleconference with District Collectors from his residence here on Wednesday morning, Mr. Naidu said authorities could utilise railway tracks for transporting rescue teams and provisions to the affected areas in Nellore district. The heavy floods have so far claimed 95 lives in Tamil Nadu. For the second day, all educational institutions in Chittoor district remained closed.

Summary: VIJAYAWADA: Indicating that the rain threat has not subsided yet, chief minister Chandrababu Naidu asked the officials to be on guard for next 48 hours.
