The helicopter had gone to airlifting a postpartum woman and her new baby for treatment in Kathmandu. Brigadier General Karki added that a rescue team of Nepal Army Shreenath Battalion have reached the crash site.

The 9N-AKA chopper made the last contact with air traffic control tower at 1:00 p.m. local time. The cause of the crash is yet to be known.

According to Fishtail Air, the ill-fated helicopter was flown by Captain Ranjan Limbu, and five persons including a two-year-old child were on board.

The Civil Aviation Authority said the wreckage had been located and efforts were on to retrieve the bodies.

In Nepal, air travel is hugely popular as there is only a limited road network.

Nepal, still reeling from last year’s devastating quake that killed almost 9,000 people, has suffered a number of air disasters in recent years.
