Hello, Adele: Singer smashes NZ record sales

The album’s 252,423 downloads beat Ed Sheeran’s “X” which sold 95,709 copies past year.

The Britpop band, fronted by Liam and Noel Gallagher, shifted 696,000 copies of their third album, Be Here Now, in its debut chart week in August 1997.

“The statistics surrounding the album are staggering, album has ever sold 800,000 copies to reach number one in the history of British music.”, said Martin Talbot – the official charts company chief executive after the album’s 100,000 downloads in a week.

Industry forecasters suggest the album could finish the week with 2.9 million sold, because Adele can shatter even numbers by the power of her voice alone. The hotly-anticipated set of new songs from the Tottenham chanteuse recorded 800,307 units giving her the highest opening week sales in United Kingdom chart history.

However, Gallagher may argue that his group still technically holds a record, because “Be Here Now” was released on a Thursday and therefore its first week sales tally included only three days of sales, whereas Adele’s include a full seven.

That means Adele’s 25 sold more than the last 19 number one albums combined.

It still has some way to go to match the sales of Adele’s last album 21, which is owned by 4.8 million people in the UK. This may be due to the fact that they risk the royalties paid to the artist as well as the exaction of definite sales made as much as they act as a significant boost to the album’s popularity.

Her singles “Hello” and “When We Were Young” have racked up a mammoth number of views on YouTube with more than half 1 billion and 28 million views respectively.

Adele’s fans had another reason to be thankful Thursday as the British singer announced a European tour via Twitter.

Billboard and Nielsen are reporting the British superstar has already sold at least 2,433,000 copies of her new album since its release on November 20th, the highest total since Nielsen began accurately tracking album sales in 1991.
