The award was announced on Wednesday in Germany, Opain S.A, which runs El Dorado, said in a statement.
According to Skytrax, this year the World Airport Awards were based on 13.25 million airport survey questionnaires asking travelers to rank their airport experience on everything from check-in and arrivals to transfers, shopping, security and immigration, “through to the departure at the gate”. The airport was also awarded Best Airport for Leisure Amenities.
Elsewhere, Singapore Changi Airport successfully defended its title as the world’s best airport, followed by Incheon Airport in Seoul, South Korea.
The airport has been voted as world’s best for seven times in 16 years. Travellers from across the globe take part each year in the world’s largest airline passenger satisfaction survey to decide the award winners.
Meanwhile, HIA has already exceeded its planned capacity of 30 million passengers annually. This year’s ranking placed Halifax ahead of the main airports for Adelaide, Perth, Montréal, Brussels, Dublin, Los Angeles and Boston’s Logan airport but behind Toronto Pearson, Vancouver, Sydney, Auckland, Denver and San Francisco.
Others in the top ten included Munich Airport in third place, which boasts its own brewery and beer garden. Day and night, they make sure that customers are served with a smile, airport operations run smoothly and services function in all situations.
“That just gives us something to shoot for”, Hankinson said.
Qatar was ranked No. 10 in the world in the annual list, up from No. 22 in 2015. Following another record-breaking year in passenger numbers, the Hungarian gateway’s continued success has once again been recognised during the Passenger Terminal EXPO conference and exhibition in the city centre of Cologne.
