Henry captures another award: SEC offensive player of year

Henry also won the Doak Walker Award for Best Running Back.

‘I didn’t know at all, ‘ he said. I think it’s yes on both counts.

He may have been the only one. Still, Fournette managed to finish with the third-most rushing yards (1,741) of any FBS player despite playing just 11 games in 2015.

Derrick Henry has won the Heisman Trophy, becoming the second Alabama player to receive college football’s most prestigious player of the year award.

This season as a junior, with Alabama breaking in a first-time starting quarterback and inexperienced receivers, the Tide hooked its offense to Henry and let him lead the way. He also remembered former Crimson Tide teammate Altee Tenpenny, who died in an automobile accident earlier this year.

Dignity, humility and character were on display on the New York City stage as Henry encouraged children watching that if they dream of something, they can achieve it. And the only loss he brought up was not reflected on a scoreboard. But Heismans are often won in November. All I wanted to do was affect them by the way I practice and the way I work hard. His normally even keel rose above the waterline when he heard his name called. Gladys Henry has been hospitalized in Florida for weeks with heart and respiratory problems.

Henry tallied 1,832 points to beat two other finalists, Stanford running back and kick returner Christian McCaffrey (1,539 points) and Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson (1,165).

Mayfield, who went to high school in Austin, was named a second-team All-American by the Associated Press on Sunday, but it came after he walked on at Texas Tech, then transferred to Oklahoma, where he also began as a walk on. The absence of Mayfield and Reynolds created howls of protest to the Heisman Trophy Trust. In the same way that a staunch Republican is going to vote for the Republican candidate and a staunch Democrat is going to vote for the Democratic candidate, these voters are the same way.

The longer the season went, the more Henry developed into a one-size-fits-all candidate.

“I know that our entire organization is really happy, happy, happy for Derrick Henry tonight, winning the Heisman Trophy”, Alabama coach Nick Saban said. The tailback proved his worth to the Crimson Tide late in the season, when he became pretty much the entire offense in the last two games of the year. Mark Ingram won the first back in 2009.

Henry’s 2015 season puts him above the rest. The number who could gain 271 yards under such circumstances is smaller still.

“He did as much for his team as anybody could have done or ever has done for any of our teams”, Saban said. There was an appearance on the “NFL Today” on CBS, an interview with “FOX & Friends” and more meet and greets with past Heisman winners. Because it means many of those faces will return to vie for the Heisman next season.

Rightfully so, Derrick Henry’s family was quite pleased with his Heisman win on Saturday night. Someone asked Shaw if he thought McCaffrey deserved the award.

MSU coach Mark Dantonio said looking at Alabama’s statistics was “daunting”, but he he hardly appeared panicked.

“He is so humble you wouldn’t believe it”, Reinkensmeyer said. “That’s not even disputable”. He became the second running back to run for 10,000 yards and never miss a start in the National Football League (130 games). McCaffrey, who set an NCAA record for all-purpose yards this season, made the first team as an all-purpose player. He took awards including the Maxwell for best player, the Campbell award for player of the year. And yes, I’m a little biased because I’ve seen the kid lead his team to a 13-0 record.
