It was the nation’s deadliest mass shooting since the Newtown, Connecticut, school tragedy three years ago that left 26 children and adults dead.

Suspects: San Bernardino, California, police identified Syed Farook, 28, and Tashfeen Malik, 27, as the two suspects in Wednesday’s shooting at the Inland Regional Center, which provides services for developmentally disabled people. Burguan said Malik and Farook were in a relationship, but it was unclear whether or not they were married or engaged.

The shooting occurred at the IRC’s conference center, which the San Bernardo County Health Department was renting out for an event. The couple had reportedly dropped off their 6-month-old daughter with relatives Wednesday morning, saying they had a doctor’s appointment.

“It is possible that this was terrorist related, but we don’t know”.

Day of shooting: Witnesses said Farook was angry when he left the holiday lunch being held at the center.

A mass shooting is when four or more people are shot in an event, or related series of events, likely without a cooling-off period, according to shootingtracker.com, a database that tracks mass shootings.

After her remarks on San Bernardino, the attorney general discussed incarceration and poverty which she said are of “equal seriousness” to mass shootings.

“He never struck me as a fanatic, he never struck me as suspicious”, said Griselda Reisinger, who had worked with Farook. Bowdich said the bureau is still investigating which countries Farook visited during his time spent overseas.

Local police, FBI, ATF and Homeland Security officials remain on scene Thursday at multiple locations in the San Bernardino and Redlands area, including the town home where Farook lived. They carried rifles and semi-automatic handguns.

Stores and offices were locked down in the city about 60 miles east of Los Angeles after the attack.

“I can not express how sad I am for what happened today”, Khan said, according to the Washington Post.
