“Fireballs occur when small – basketball-sized or Volkswagen-sized – asteroids enter the Earth’s atmosphere and disintegrate from the atmospheric friction”, Yeomans said in an email.
Dozens of people took to social media to share videos and photos and marvel at the white fireball flying through the sky that some described as a shooting star. Theory given by experts may be the correct version as a Russian craft launched Monday from Kazakhstan on a voyage to the International Space Station (ISS). Some people also expressed distrust about the US government’s comments on the rocket.
The debris that burned up Tuesday was part of a rocket that’s frequently used in the Russian space program, according to Hannah Thoburn, a research fellow at the Hudson Institute who specializes in the internal politics of Russia and Ukraine.
