The total lunar eclipse taking place Sunday night will coincide with a supermoon, the first time this has happened since 1982. The next total lunar eclipse will not be until 2018.
The reason the moon can be seen at all when totally eclipsed is that sunlight is scattered and refracted around the edge of the Earth by the planet’s atmosphere.
The supermoon will also be staging a Blood Moon eclipse on the night of 27-28 September. “I remember doing it as a kid”. So, if you are in United States or Canada, South America or Western and Central Europe or Western Africa then your’re lucky to witness the best Supermoon lunar eclipse of your generation.
The moon gets its light from the sun, but during a lunar eclipse it moves into the shadow of theEarth, which blocks the Sunday.
During this time, part of the moon will appear to be darker.
Tetrads occur when four total lunar eclipses happen in a span of 18 months, and they can be very rare. The event starts at 5:11 p.m. which is when the moon starts to pass into the prenumbral stage, but we will not be able to see this. He says the full moon in September is called the Harvest Moon and is closest to the autumnal equinox.
Some serious astronomers dislike the term “supermoon”, noting that the visible difference between a regular full moon and a supermoon is slight to all but the most faithful observers.
Why does a lunar eclipse make the moon appear red?
The sun earth creates a shadow which causes the moon to darken and discolor.
