With the rise of streaming services Netflix and Amazon, Emmy Awards powerhouse HBO saw its overall tally of nominations drop to 94 from last year’s 126 nods.

FX is the network behind “American Crime Story” (not the TV show “American Crime”, which airs on ABC – yes, it’s confusing). Spy drama The Americans received nominations for five award categories which, according to critics and experts were overdue and the nominations includes best actor for Mathew Rhys, Keri Russell for best actress, outstanding drama series and the best writing award for their season’s final show.
The contenders for best actor in a comedy series are “Transparent” actor Jeffrey Tambor, “Silicon Valley” actor Thomas Middleditch, “Shameless” actor William H. Macy, “Last Man on Earth” actor Will Forte, “Master of None” actor Aziz Ansari, and “Black-ish” actor Anthony Anderson.
The nominations for the TV’s most prestigious awards were announced yesterday afternoon (July 14) and the HBO show found itself shortlisted 23 times – more than any other show.
Power-and-blood fantasy saga “Game of Thrones” ruled the Emmy Award nominations Thursday with a leading 23 bids, including best drama, while a real-life epic of murder and celebrity, “The People v. O.J. Simpson”, was close behind with 22 nods.
Cuba Gooding Jr, who played OJ Simpson, and Courtney B Vance, who played Simpson’s lawyer Johnnie Cochran, are both up for best lead actor in a limited series.
In the acting categories, previous nominees Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, and Emilia Clarke were joined by first-timers Maisie Williams, Kit Harington, as well as the legendary Max von Sydow in the Guest Role category for his work as the Three-Eyed Raven. It was only the second season of this show and their nominated star Anthony Anderson was also in the hosts at the ceremony of nominations.
Meanwhile, Dame Maggie Smith is up for best supporting actress in a drama series for her role in Downton Abbey.
The British funnyman will also compete against Adele and Beyonce for the Emmy for outstanding variety special.
Laurie Metcalf’s best actress nomination for the HBO comedy “Getting On” was a mild surprise, and she beat out big names like Melissa McCarthy, Jane Fonda and Ana Faris of “Mom”.
Veep earned 17 nominations, including best comedy series and best lead actress in a comedy series, for its star Julia-Louis Dreyfus.
But there were no major nods for the stars of “Fresh Off the Boat” or other Asian-American actors, or for Latinos, which has been a recurrent Emmy pattern.
“I jumped up and down… more about that than about my own”, Paulson said. She deserves everything she is nominated for and/or wins.
