Here’s who won the vice-presidential debate, according to one poll – and partisans

“Tim Kaine repeatedly focused on trying to attack Governor Pence instead of talking about Hillary Clinton’s agenda”, she said, “while Governor Pence laid out a great vision of how Donald Trump is ready to make America great again”. “His assignment was to go out there and draw the sharpest distinctions between his running mate, Hillary Clinton and Gov.Pence’s running mate, (Donald) Trump”, said Schapiro who has covered Virginia elections and politics for the past 30 years.

“He saw a debate two nights ago where his own running mate sort of threw him under the bus”, Kaine said.

He said that at his first debate with Clinton, he “did hold back” from lobbing “inappropriate” personal attacks.

“We’re really happy with Governor Pence’s performance”. Both men are deeply religious – Kaine is Roman Catholic, Pence is a born-again Evangelical – and they spoke from the heart. “Mike Pence looked more like he was looking at 2020 than 2016”. Chris Christie, Trump’s debate coach, also attended the event.

Mr Pence frequently avoided taking the bait – a shrewd move for a conservative darling who could have eyes on the Oval Office himself if Donald Trump loses in November.

For Clinton, the second debate is an opportunity to sustain the momentum she’s drawn from the first.

“It was very, very hard to allow executions to go forward, but in circumstances where I didn’t feel like there was a case for clemency, I told Virginia voters I would uphold the law, and I did”, Kaine said. “Well, Germany just arrested three Syrian refugees who were connected to ISIS….”, Pence continued, before Kaine interrupted him, one of the seventy times he did so during the evening.

Kaine: When Donald Trump says women should be punished or Mexicans are rapists and criminals or John McCain’s not a hero, he is showing you who he is. “Nothing – nothing was going in the net last night”, he said.

“I truly do believe Donald Trump embodies the American spirit – strong, freedom-loving, independent, optimistic, and willing to fight everyday for what he believes in”. They’re not sending you.
