“We want to win”, said Semenko who was on the Oilers squad that beat Montreal Canadiens’ alumni 2-0 during the 2003 Heritage Classic. The Jets are the 22nd National Hockey League team to play in a regular-season outdoor game.
As well, Jets forward Blake Wheeler and Oilers goalie Cam Talbot modelled the new heritage classic jerseys their respective teams will be wearing when they face off at Investors Group Field on October 23.
Both jerseys are a throwback to what the Jets and Oilers wore in the 1970’s while playing in the World Hockey Association.
Now we get to the alumni rosters for the game scheduled for October 22.
Apparently I live in a vacuum (or under a snowbank) in Winnipeg and had not driven by Portage and Main to see that very logo on the Heritage Classic window display on the sponsor Scotia Bank’s building.
“This is overwhelming”, Chipman said to the crowd.
“We’ve been looking forward to this event since we re-entered the NHL IN 2011”.
Teemu Selanne, Teppo Numminen, Morris Lukowich and goalie Bob Essensa, not to mention Hawerchuk himself, are among the former Jets coming. The Jets wearing the uniform their namesake wore during that final game on May 20, 1979 and the Oilers wearing their orange uniform from the club’s first seasons in Edmonton – it just also happens to be their current alternate jersey.
Fan favourite and last year’s leading scorer for the Jets Blake Wheeler signs autographs for fans Friday. “It’s just going to add to the excitement”.
