Hermine again gains force, threatening northeast USA coast

Authorities, including Christie, warned people to stay away from the water, and beaches in New York City and on Long Island – which would have been full of Labor-Day weekend revelers – were closed to swimmers Sunday. The storm was centered about 320 miles (515 kilometers) southeast of the eastern tip of Long Island.

Heading into Monday, Hermine is expected to turn northward, increasing the threat of bad weather for parts of DE, eastern Long Island, Rhode Island and MA, gradually weakening by Monday night and beginning to exit the Northeast US coast sometime Wednesday.

Meanwhile, inland areas of Central New Jersey can expect a windy Labor Day with gusts of 20-30 M.P.H. which could bring down some trees and cause power outages, according to officials. Tropical storm warnings are still in effect for coastal Connecticut, Long Island Sound, and eastern Long Island, with winds possible of up to 55 miles per hour.

A beachgoer stands at the edge of the water, Sunday, Sept. 4, 2016, in Bridgehampton, N.Y., on the southeastern shore of Long Island, where the effects of storm system Hermine could be seen in the rough surf and a ban on swim.

Because of concerns about rough seas, unsafe surf and strong storm surge, no swimming was allowed on NY beaches Sunday.

MD Mahabub Khan has worked as a taxi cart pusher at the shore for 27 years and said he still attracted some business over the weekend, but the smaller crowds were noticeable.

Mercer says the path of the storm is still uncertain, so people should check their weather forecasts in case the intensity changes.

Tropical storm Hermine could strengthen as it meanders off the New Jersey coast causing widespread flooding and risky rip tides, while the Lehigh Valley forecast calls for sunny skies today and just a 20 percent chance of rain Monday.

The meteorologist says the Category 1 hurricane has been downgraded to a post-tropical storm and is projected to continue to lose steam as it hits Canadian waters mid to late next week.

It has caused two deaths, inflicted widespread property damage and closed beaches as far north as NY.

As of 11 a.m. Monday, Hermine’s top sustained winds were steady at 70 miles per hour (110 kph) as it moved northwest at 6 miles per hour (9 kph). But the threat of high winds and storm surges had already ruined holiday plans for many, as beaches closed across the Northeast and were expected to remain closed on Monday.

Many beaches in New Jersey and NY plan to close Monday.

In New Jersey, big waves and churning surf up to the base of dunes were reported in some areas of the state hit hard by Superstorm Sandy in October 2012, including the Ocean County communities of Point Pleasant Beach, Bay Head, Mantoloking and Brick.

One person died Saturday when a tractor-trailer overturned while crossing a bridge in eastern North Carolina amid high winds from Hermine, a spokesman for the state’s Department of Public Safety, Michael Baker, said.

Earlier in Florida, a homeless man died from a falling tree. This includes the preparation of derivative works of, or the incorporation of such content into other works.
