Hermine kills 2, hits beach weekends in US
Saturday Governor Chris Christie declared a state of emergency for Ocean County, Atlantic County, and Cape May County.

The exact location the storm will stall off the east coast and for how long the storm stalls out and impacts the region for 3-5 days and just a little jog north could mean a stronger impact for CT.
When Hermine moves northwest, the storm will begin to influence our weather and nearby ocean waters.
Emergency declarations remained in effect for all or parts of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland, and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo activated his state’s emergency operations center.
Now a Tropical Storm – Hurricane Hermine made landfall east of St. Marks, Florida early Friday morning.
Surging tides from the storm could be as high as 3 feet from Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, to Montauk Point, New York, including the North Shore of Long Island.
Elizabeth Brister, 23, saw her Labor Day weekend plans in “A.C.” blow away in the wind.
Several Labor Day events have been affected, including Saturday’s Bruce Springsteen concert in Virginia Beach that has now been moved to Monday.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) continues a storm surge warning for the Hampton Roads, including Virginia Beach and Norfolk.
Kantrow said sustained winds are expected to reach speeds of 20 to 25 miles per hour, and because of the strength of the winds, the biggest issue residents could potentially be facing are scattered power outages.
A tropical storm warning has been extended until further notice to include all New Jersey and NY coastal areas, including the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Long Island, Queens, Staten Island and Westchester.
Tropical Storm Watches have been replaced by warnings for the Cape, Islands and southern Rhode Island.
And since sea levels have risen up to a foot due to global warming, climate scientists say, storm surges pushed by Hermine could lead to significant damage.
Michael Mann of the Pennsylvania State University noted that this century’s one-foot sea-level rise in New York City meant 25 more square miles flooded during Hurricane Sandy in 2012, causing billions more in damage.
“Because it’s a holiday weekend, it would be more hard to get National Guard members in because they’re staffing levels wouldn’t be as high as they normally would be”, Christie said.
He called the weekend “definitely disappointing”, although his bounce house was packed. The hurricane center is predicting unsafe storm surges from Virginia to New Jersey by Monday.
Tyrell County Sheriff Darryl Liverman told the Virginian-Pilot that high winds tipped over an 18-wheeler, killing its driver and shutting down the US 64 bridge.
Overnight, four people suffered minor injuries when a tornado hit a campground in Hatteras Village, Dare County, North Carolina, officials said.
Labor Day weekend plans that include a beach trip may have to change for residents living in coastal areas from Virginia to CT. The rain will hold until late Sunday night with the best chance for a few showers Monday and Tuesday.

One storm-related death was reported by authorities in the northern Florida town of Ocala, where a fallen tree killed a homeless man sleeping in his tent. “While there is still uncertainty as to how far west the storm will track as it approaches New York State, we stand ready and prepared to respond with emergency equipment, supplies and personnel”.
