On Friday, before hitting the Atlantic, Hermine rolled out of the Gulf of Mexico and across northern Florida as the first hurricane to hit the state in over a decade.

Rain will spread in from the ocean across Rhode Island and the eastern parts of Massachusetts, Connecticut and Long Island, New York.

“Widespread moderate to major flooding is now expected with the Sunday evening high tide and the Monday morning high tide, especially from Atlantic City south to coastal DE, when the storm is expected to make its closest approach to the area”, the weather service said, adding that significant beach erosion is forecast.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie declared a State of Emergency for Ocean, Atlantic and Cape May counties in preparation the storm.

Tropical storm-force winds were possible on Labor Day in New Jersey. Here are the storm’s current stats as of 5 a.m. Sunday: LOCATION: Center of Hermine located about 300 miles S/SE of the eastern tip of Long Island.

“Anyone along the U.S. East Coast needs to be paying close attention this weekend”, said Dennis Feltgen, a spokesman for the National Hurricane Center. “We think it could become hurricane force again”, Knabb said, as the storm was likely to strengthen as it moved over warm water.

They said they were still enjoying their time at the shore.

The widespread power outages and flooding that battered Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas had likewise yet to materialize farther north, where alarming news reports scared tourists away from the beach on Sunday.

“It was a little overhyped by the media”, said Andrew Thulin, assistant general manager of Daddy O Hotel Restaurant in Long Beach Township, New Jersey. “I talk to all my other colleagues in our business and everybody was like, ‘Are we going to send the Weather Channel a bill?'”

“The temperature is great”.

On Sunday afternoon, he said, a few homes still lacked power. “Knowing the storm is 100 miles out at sea is comforting”.

Emergency officials gained access to the FEMA broadcast system after 2012, when Superstorm Sandy caused major devastation, flooding and even deaths across Long Island and throughout NY and New Jersey. A homeless man was killed by a falling tree Friday in Florida. Within five hours, it was downgraded to a tropical storm but still packed a wallop. A chance of rain is expected through Wednesday.

The storm was reclassified on Saturday as a post-tropical cyclone as it merged with a conventional weather front.
