Hermine remains post-tropical storm, not expected to directly impact our region
Tropical storm watches and warnings were in effect from Virginia to MA, with special concern focused on New Jersey and DE, where Rehoboth Beach could experience wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour and life-threatening storm surges during high tide late Sunday and into Monday. Hermine will continue to twist hundreds of miles off shore in the Atlantic Ocean and keep swimmers and surfers out of beach waters because of its risky waves and rip currents on the last day of the long holiday weekend. No significant rainfall was expected for the area, although scattered rain may occur in parts of southern New England and in the mid-Atlantic states.

On Sunday, Governor Andrew Cuomo issued an update on Tropical Storm Hermine for the areas of the Lower Hudson Valley, Long Island, and New York City.
“Don’t be lulled by the nice weather”, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Sunday. “Don’t think that nothing is going to happen, because something is going to happen. There will be impact from this storm”.
The National Hurricane Center didn’t want those along the coast to let their guard down just yet, saying storm surge would still be a concern for the next few days as well as large waves and rip currents.
Hermine already caused two deaths, damaged properties and left hundreds of thousands without electricity from Florida to Virginia.
Dominion Virginia Power said crews were working to restore power to about 5,000 customers in North Carolina and 1,500 in southeast Virginia. The company expects service to those customers to be restored by 5 p.m. Monday.
Almost 80,000 utility customers in Florida were still without electricity, according to the Florida Division of Emergency Management.
The Anclote River northwest of Tampa was forecast to go well into major flood stage Sunday afternoon.
The storm – which hit Florida as a Category One hurricane on Friday – was forecast to slam the city with tropical storm conditions for several days starting Sunday.
At 11 a.m. Sunday, Hermine’s top sustained winds strengthened to 70 miles per hour (110 kph) as it moved east-northeast at 10 miles per hour (17 kph).
Atlantic storm Hermine, which has killed two people, lurked off the middle of the U.S. East Coast late on Sunday while threatening to regain hurricane strength, after having spared the region the brunt of its wind, rain and tidal surge.
Hermine, now considered a post-tropical cyclone, is currently swirling hundreds of miles off the coast in the Atlantic Ocean, further east than meteorologists predicted.
Storm-surge inundation levels of no more than one to three feet (30 cm to 1 m) were expected in coastal areas.
Parks officials say beaches will be closed to swimming, bathing and surfing on Tuesday.
A tropical storm watch was in effect from Watch Hill, R.I., to Sagamore Beach, Mass., as well as Block Island, R.I., Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. “And it’s only the beginning”.
