Jed Lowrie got the game’s first hit, a double to right, but was stranded there when Khris Davis struck out and Yonder Alonso grounded out.

The bullpen threw shutout relief to get the game to the ninth inning, then Ryan Madson took over after the Coghlan homer and made quick work of the Mariners for his second save in three days. With two out, former A’s outfielder Seth Smith walked, and Bassitt seemed to have pitched out of trouble when Ketel Marte slapped a routine grounder toward Lowrie.

Oakland won the first two games of the weekend series between the AL West foes thanks largely to a stellar performance from Hill (1-1).

Seattle Mariners left fielder Norichika Aoki jumps as the home run ball hit by Oakland Athletics’ Marcus Semien flies into the stands during the eighth inning of a baseball game, Sunday, April 10, 2016, in Seattle.

Iannetta had the lone blow, with a solo home run in the second inning.

Here’s one more joyful thing: proof that Robi is healthy. “It’s a lot of fun”, Oakland catcher Stephen Vogt said.

Kyle Seager led off the Seattle half of the 10th with a double, but Robinson Cano, Nelson Cruz and pinch-hitter Dae-Ho Lee failed to bring him in against Oakland closer Sean Doolittle. “He can throw his breaking ball in any count, but it was the command of the fastball that was much better than we’ve seen”.

Instead, tonight the A’s beat the Mariners by looking like the team we were supposed to be, while the Mariners sank back to an uncomfortably familiar version of themselves. The closer got ahead of Coghlan with two strikes and one ball, but Coghlan took advantage of a pitch over the middle of the plate to plate the game victor for Oakland.

Hernandez struck out 10 over seven scoreless innings, but Seattle’s bullpen allowed two solo homers and the Oakland Athletics got a 2-1, 10-inning victory over the struggling Mariners to sweep a three-game series.

After the A’s went from the fifth inning without a hit, Chris Coghlan jolted a long homer to right field with one out in the ninth as Oakland pinned a 3-2 loss on Seattle on Friday in the Mariners’ home opener.

“The pitch to Reddick we’d all like to have back in that situation”, Seattle manager Scott Servais said.

“That (pitch) was a little bit up; it wasn’t the best pitch in the world”, Crisp said.

Seattle was hoping for a strong debut from Karns after he was acquired from Tampa Bay via trade in the offseason.

Hernandez pitched 6.0 innings in his last outing, surrendering three, striking out six and walking five in a 3-2 defeat to the Rangers. I’m sure that’s exactly how Eric Surkamp wanted to begin his first start, with the confidence of stellar defense behind him.

The University of Washington women’s basketball team was honored and given a standing ovation during the game for its run to the Final Four – the first in program history. “Just saw a changeup up and put a good swing on it”, Reddick said.

-Josh Reddick was in the lineup Friday night, but as the DH as he got a day off from right field because of some tightness in his back.

“That’s not me, ” said Hernandez, who was charged with one earned run.
