A ginger cat is being credited with saving the life of a US toddler after taking a bullet to the head near where the child was sleeping.

It happened early Thursday morning.

Last week, a stray bullet came flying in Angelica Sipe’s home, WPMT-TV reports.

Amazingly – depending on how seriously you take the idea that cats have nine lives – the marmalade moggie survived and is expected to make a full recovery, despite the damage inflicted by the hot lead.

A Pennsylvania cat named Opie has earned himself a parade after sustaining a bullet wound so that his human boy wouldn’t have to. “Then I saw my cat on the floor and that’s when I realized my cat was shot”.

Daemira’s mum, Angelica, said that the bullet landed just inches from where her son was sleeping – and the cat saved his life. “He is my hero!!!!”

“It could have been my son”, Sipe told KTLA 5.

Sipe did not respond to Yahoo Parenting’s request for comment. Sipe had an option of putting him down due to his injuries but she chose to save him.

“It could have been my son”, Sipe said as she teared up.

According to York City Police, multiple castings were recovered from the area and an investigation is ongoing.

Ms Sipe said while she is used to hearing gunshots on nearby streets, the violence had never entered her own neighbourhood.

“I wanted to keep him”.

In the meantime, she’s grateful for a son and a cat that are both doing well.

“I want out”, she told Fox43. Have an interesting story to share about your family?
