NBC 5 Investigates contacted all 99 police agencies involved in the search and 84 said they sent a total of 462 officers to the one-day dragnet.
He had gained a significant amount of experience in staging mock crime scenes while running the program and used that to try to fool investigators.
Gliniewicz, who ran the program for years, also reportedly forged signatures on federal requisitions for police equipment.
There are no winners here.
“If she gets ahold of the old checking account, im pretty well f(asterisk)(asterisk)(asterisk)ed”, the first message reads.
The ultimate result are feelings of anger and frustration from a community of residents and law enforcement.
“We completely believed from day one that (the death of Gliniewicz) was a homicide”, he said.
He said: “We have determined this staged suicide was the end result of extensive criminal acts that Gliniewicz had been committing”.
The amount of theft was “in the five-figure range”, Filenko said.

The cop was hailed as a hero cut down in the line of duty – until now. Responding officers found his body near his squad auto.
A massive manhunt outside of Chicago ensued, though no arrests were made and no suspects were identified.
Gliniewicz died on the morning of September 1, according to the (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald. “I really don’t. It’s hard to believe”. [To suggest] otherwise is disrespectful, hurtful, irresponsible. His head was scraped and bruised, although the coroner said that could have been intentional.
Members of the Fox Lake community react to the announcement that Lt. Joe Gliniewicz’s death was ruled a suicide. Officials told CBS News he tried to make his suicide look like a murder because he hoped to be remembered as a hero – and not as a thief. A sheriff’s office representative declined further comment.
He was struck by two rounds, one that hit his ballistic vest with the force of a “sledgehammer” and another that pierced his upper chest, Lake County Major Crimes Task Force Commander George Filenko said at the time. He asks for backup.
Hundreds of mourners packed a vigil for Gliniewicz as well as his funeral.
– Thursday, September 3: Authorities use at least 100 investigators to broaden the hunt from the initial 2-square-mile perimeter.
As of this writing, 31 police officers have been killed by gunfire in 2015, while more than 1,000 people have been killed by police. “A suicide, a homicide, an accident”, Dr. Rudd said. Conservatives immediately began blaming the Black Lives Matter movement.
The correspondence suggests that he staged his fatal shooting amid concerns about the finances behind his police department Explorers program for aspiring officers.
Gliniewicz’s son D.J. had told FOX 32 Chicago that his father “never once” thought of suicide and had talked excitedly about what he planned to do after retiring.
Gliniewicz was shot twice with his weapon. The first shot was aimed at his phone and bullet-proof vest.
Marrin also was shocked, when she learned that Gliniewicz had threatened her personally.

At Wednesday’s news conference Filenko defended how the investigation was initially handled, said NBC News.
