Memphis followed that Instagram post up with his take on his first European outing at Old Trafford: ‘A win, two goals, Champions League debut.

Memphis Depay fired Manchester United to the brink of the Champions Leagu e – with a kiss from boss Louis van Gaal his reward.

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has hit back at his critics after his slow start to the season, insisting that he’ll start scoring again sooner rather than later. “It’s not a game I’ll want to look back on, but obviously you have games like that”, he said about the game at Villa Park which United won 1-0.

“I want to kiss him“, United manager Louis van Gaal said.

“It’s his team now, his players, and if the new signings settle quickly, I think it’s possible”, the Dutch player concluded.

Van Gaal, however, claimed his men should have scored more goals ahead of next Wednesday’s return leg.

Wayne Rooney has backed himself to find his goalscoring touch amid widespread criticism of his performances so far this season.

He added: “I think our relationship is starting to build up”.

That kind of praise is something that doesn’t come around very often but it seems that Memphis is capable of taking such comments in his stride. “But it was a good result and we have to travel to Bruges and finish the job over there”.

Rooney is feeling the pressure, despite the fact United have only played a few competitive games this season.

“It’s still early in the season, we’re only played three games, so it’s down to me to keep going”. “Because when you score two goals and give an assist, then normally in the world you are the hero”.

Rooney is being played in an orthodox striker role this season after he was deployed in a midfield position by Louis van Gaal last season.

The Dutchman continued, “I am very happy for Depay as he needs that”.
