Heroes Reborn Creator Discusses Characters Returning to Show

“Some of the people, some of the actors, did not have the availability because they were involved in other things”, Kring said, stating there is little they can do to bring the actors back since this has to do with the storyline. “There was an event that happened, which is a mystery”. “We were right at the top of the most-streamed shows, the top of the most DVRed show and we sold lots and lots of DVDs”. However, as the time passed by, the series’ ratings began to drop, until eventually, the network had to cut the cord. “But as Phoebe struggles to control her power, she attracts unwanted attention from a mysterious new company”. However, certain main characters will not return like Claire, played by Hayden Panettiere, and the infamous villain Sylar, played by Zachary Quinto.

Aside from the extra hour awarded to Kring’s revival of the cult classic, the series also released a six-episode webseries that would hopefully bridge the gap between Claire Bennett’s public announcement of her powers and the upcoming “Heroes Reborn” premiere. To turn that around and say it can be like ‘Northern Exposure, ‘ with continuing stories that happen to be inside a giant glass dome instead of in Alaska, makes for a very different kind of show. It’s essentially doing what Kring originally wanted to do with the series by introducing a new group each year, rather than focus on the same ongoing characters. He added, “When you log onto this show for the very first time, you know that you’re going to get an end, and it will be at that point in time”. It was nearly an obligatory baton pass to where we needed to go from there. The problem is how viewers who were told there were a certain number of episodes would respond to that.

The biggest pitfall was always the amount of story that we had to tell.

Heroes ended after five seasons. “That was the thinking”.

At TCA, Kring lamented how things went down five years ago. If it had never been canceled, then the show would be entering its tenth season. “The original cast were all furiously texting each other”. By the time the show ended its run, there were so few people watching that it was hard to judge its quality. There are tons of Easter eggs…

He continues, “All the characters that return are peppered in and out of the show”.

But even in the current rehash, reboot and regurgitate TV culture, NBC’s reliance on “Heroes Reborn” (8-10 p.m. September 24) remains a head-scratcher.
