Heyward and Wong homer, Cardinals top Marlins 6

Right-hander Carlos Martinez shook off a slow start and a fastball that hit him in the right shoulder to pitch seven innings, helping the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Miami Marlins 4-3 Tuesday.

Latos is 4-1 with a 2.31 ERA in his last six against the Cardinals, but he hasn’t faced them since he was with Cincinnati in 2013.

Left fielder Hanley Ramirez left with a bruised left hand and second baseman Dustin Pedroia limped off after his tiebreaking, two-run single with tightness in his right hamstring. His fielding has also been solid, checking in at above average in both DRS and UZR. 093 to.140. It stung, as Kolten Wong hammered a misplaced changeup off an electonic advertising panel on the facing of the upper deck in right for a two-run homer. St. Louis has allowed just 202 runs to opponents this season, by far the lowest amount of any team in the game.

The Marlins have lost seven of their past eight games while scoring a total of 17 runs, and their defense is slumping, too. Trevor Rosenthal, of the Cardinals, earned his twenty-second save of the season. The Cardinals won 5-1. He has walked just two batters in his past six starts and likely would have had a better record except that the Cardinals have been shut out in three of his seven appearances this season.

Jason Heyward blew the game open when homered for the third consecutive game in the seventh.

The Marlins’ leadoff batter in the third inning reached second base, but Lynn escaped.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) – Taylor Featherston poked an RBI single over first base with two outs in the 13th inning to give Los Angeles a victory Houston. Cardinals take the win in Game One, handing Martinez his eighth. Garcia went seven innings for the Cardinals, lowering his ERA to 1.69 and getting plenty of offensive support in a 6-1 win.

“We had Giancarlo lead off four innings”, Jennings said.

Consider: Marlins starter Mat Latos pitched seven innings, giving up three hits and allowing only five baserunners. Kozma scored on a two-out double by Wong. The Cardinals made it 4-0 in the seventh.

St. Louis takes on Miami as a -121 favorite. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly then replaced Joel Peralta (1-1) with Kenley Jansen and brought the infield in.

“Obviously, a couple of big wins for us”, Los Angeles manager Don Mattingly said.

Cole had allowed just three earned runs over four starts in 27 innings in June.

Stanton signed the richest contract in baseball history in the offseason, a 13-year, $325 million extension through the 2027 season. He is 0-4 with a 4.43 ERA since beating Pittsburgh on May 16.

“We got some hits off him”, Stanton said, “but he did a good job keeping it going until the seventh”. “With good pitchers, you have to do that”. The loss went to Sam Dyson.

“Physically, I felt fine”, Lester said. He struck out four and walked one, and Blake Treinen finished the Nationals’ eighth shutout with a two-hit ninth (see full recap). “His last three innings were probably his best”.

What they couldn’t do was find a way to manufacture a serious threat against a Cardinals team that year after year does everything needed, large and small, to keep winning. I think in the past, he probably would have swung through.
