That set up Heyward’s heroics in the ninth.

When you hit.106 in a four-game series, you take hope wherever you can find it.

The four-game series was akin to playoff baseball, with each game decided by one run.

YANKEES 5, ORIOLES 2 Chase Headley and Austin Romine had two RBI apiece, and visiting NY beat Baltimore to prevent a three-game sweep and remain afloat in the AL wild-card race.

Despite the loss, Baltimore is still clinging to the second wild card in the American League. The Cubs had won five in a row overall.

NY reliever Luis Severino (2-8) picked up the win after entering for starter Michael Pineda in the fifth inning.

Nez got such a good jump that he scored standing up.

J.D. Martinez, who fractured his right elbow June 16 while running into the wall at Kauffman Stadium, homered in the fourth. ASTROS 7, RANGERS 6 George Springer and Evan Gattis hit home runs to help visiting Houston avoid a series sweep and snap Texas’ seven-game winning streak.

White Sox 13, Twins 11 (12 innings) – At Minneapolis: Jose Abreu hit two three-run homers and drove in a career-best seven runs, and Chicago used Tim Anderson’s two-run double in the 12th inning to get a wild win over Minnesota. Including those outs, he retired 10 in a row before Eduardo Nunez got the Giants’ first hit with one out in the fifth, a double. Robert Osuna pitched a ideal ninth for his 30th save of the season.

Reds 9, Cardinals 1: Zack Cozart hit a pair of doubles during run-scoring innings that included St. Louis misplays, and the Reds sent the Cardinals to their third straight loss.

The Reds suffered what might be a significant injury when center fielder Billy Hamilton left in the third inning with a strained left oblique.

Lots of things happened in this one, so let’s start at the beginning. Seung Hwan Oh recorded his 15th save.

Four Brewers pitchers combined for the shutout.

The big outburst came against right-hander Marco Estrada (8-7), who had given up just two singles in the first five innings.

The Cubs tied it in the fourth.

Villar’s homer came as a pinch hitter in the sixth.

Heyward has five multihit games in his last eight starts. Since then – including Sunday’s game – Heyward is hitting.308/.321/.423 (16-for-52) with three doubles, a home run and nine RBI. We lost three out of four. The Braves have won 10 of their last 14.

METS 5, NATIONALS 1 Seth Lugo kept pitching like a playoff-tested ace rather than a rookie, Curtis Granderson and Jay Bruce each hit two-run home runs and host NY beat Washington. The slim lead lasted two batters.

The loss dropped Baltimore three games off first place in the AL East. The Toronto Blue Jays (77-59), a victor at Tampa Bay earlier in the day, moved a game ahead of the Red Sox.

Lugo limited the Nationals to one run in seven innings. Finally, he went back to left center to drive in Anthony Rizzo with the victor in the 13th. After the game, the Angels announced that a CT scan revealed Shoemaker suffered a small skull fracture and small hematoma. He was scheduled to stay overnight for observation and will meet with a neurologist in Seattle while the Angels continue their road trip in Oakland.

The Giants finished with just 14 hits in the series. Cahill got three easy ground balls for a 1-2-3 13th.

Martin hit his 17th home run on a 3-0 pitch from Kevin Jepsen.

Los Angeles took two of three in the weekend series.

The San Francisco Giants have struggled for almost three months now, while the Chicago Cubs are on the verge of solidifying their place atop of the NL Central standings.

Puig went 1-for-2 with two walks, making him 3-for-6 since he came back from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Cleveland’s Lonnie Chisenhall capped a three-run rally with a two-out single in the ninth inning that lifted the Indians to a 6-5 victory over Miami. Heyward’s single up the middle tied the game as Wrigley Field shook. “It’s one day at a time, and you keep competing and try to do something every day to help the team win”.
