“Chelsea have had nine managers since 2008, so I think the fans should hope that the next manager can be there for a good three-plus years, in order to try to build on the legacy that Jose’s left them”.

Hiddink is probably wise to take his time over his decision as he has to be certain what he is walking into after all the apparent upheaval behind the scenes – Chelsea’s technical director Michael Emenalo cited “palpable discord” between the manager and the players – during Mourinho’s last few months in charge.

West Ham boss Bilic admitted he expected Chelsea to give Mourinho more time to arrest the club’s poor form.

However, given Chelsea have taken the decision to sack Mourinho, the club obviously felt confident they had someone lined up to take his place and it wold be a surprise if Hiddink pulled out now.

“In the interim, the best guy for the job would be Guus Hiddink”.

Speculation soon gathered pace that Chelsea would turn to Hiddink at least until the end of the season.

Former Chelsea captain Wilkins, who also worked at the club with managers Gianluca Vialli, Luiz Felipe Scolari and Carlo Ancelotti, described him as “probably the best man-manager I’ve ever seen”.

“He would be the one person I would say would be absolutely ideal to come in to the end of the season and straighten them out”.

“He is a fantastic manager with a record that nobody has in this football world, but it is still possible”.

Hiddink, who was sacked by Holland in June after a disastrous start to their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign from which they failed to recover, told De Telegraaf: “I want to get some good insight before I make my decision”.

Mourinho’s final game in charge was Monday’s 2-1 defeat to Leicester City which left the club in 16th – just one point above the relegation zone.

The messy departure of Dr Eva Carneiro, now suing the club, after being branded “naive” by Mourinho in August, has been viewed externally as causing extra unrest.

Bruce also revealed he was saddened by his exit from Stamford Bridge, admitting he admired Mourinho a lot.

“Another wrote: “…ok? Maybe Chelsea would like to announce that”.
