High school football team kneels during anthem

The entire Garfield High School football team kneels during national anthem before their game against West Seattle tonight.

She scoffs at San Francisco 49ers player Colin Kaepernicks’ refusal to stand for the anthem.

“If these kids can be courageous enough to do this as kids, and they’re leading by example, what impact can you have?”

“The whole goal of this, Kaepernick said and we have said several times, that this isn’t about disrespecting our troops”, said Thomas. I could only respect them for doing that.

“This is not a disrespectful movement”.

“I decided I’d stand for them”, he told the Chronicle.

According to a spokesperson for Seattle Public Schools, the protest is a first amendment issue and for that reason, the school fully supports the students in their right to protest. “It’s because of our troops we can exercise this right, freedom of speech”.

Mission High is believed to be the first high school team to take a knee en masse after individual players have taken a knee on teams across the country in the last week.

“It’s important that the whole team did it”, coach Hill said. He said he encouraged them to really find out how they feel about the issue, then feel comfortable with the decision they make. And as a team, we have chosen to stand and interlock arms in unity.

When asked whether he felt it disrespectful, he said it depends on what’s in the person’s heart.

Isham has a long family history of military service, and is angered that anyone would not respect the National Anthem. I know it doesn’t offend a lot of people, [but] it offends me because it’s a personal thing. They say everyone at school has been supportive.
