Lewis Hamilton got out of his winless funk in the last race and should be back to make a charge at the season title once again.

Ecclestone, meanwhile, was on Thursday sounding less upbeat about the future of the popular Canadian grand prix, revealing he is disappointed that efforts to improve the ageing circuit facilities have so far not borne any fruit. If Sebastian Vettel had won, their strategists would have been hailed heroes, but not so in this case.

Leaving from the pole position, Hamilton gave up the lead on Sebastian Vettel’s audacious move at the start, but then regained it midway through the race when the German went to pit row.

Lewis Hamilton was seen chatting to showbiz star Justin Bieber after his Monaco Grand Prix victory but now the two seem to be hanging out as dirt bike buddies. Rosberg and Hamilton touched, sending the German across the grass at the first turn and dropping him to 10th place.

With the victory, Hamilton cut Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg’s lead in the championship standings from 24 points to nine, 116-107.

Record breaking Dutch teenager Max Verstappen was fourth for Red Bull, finishing ahead of championship leader Rosberg who was fifth in the second Mercedes after a last lap spin.

Vettel made a mistake at a chicane with 13 laps remaining, as he went flat-out in pursuit of Hamilton. The race is a 189-mile contest that will run 70 laps around the track. “Today I had another really bad start, I’m not sure why – probably overheating my clutch”. “We don’t just place our logo and that’s it. If we enter into something we want to add value”.

“Other than that I was just trying to chase this guy [Vettel] down”. That would leave Red Bull disappointed, with Daniel Ricciardo having another hard race yielding only seventh in the end.

As the duo return to the most populous city in the province of Quebec, they look to return to the front-running form shown when Grosjean finished sixth in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix and fifth in Round 2 at the Bahrain Grand Prix. “We’ve got to clean some things up for Sunday”.

A disappointing afternoon was compounded by the fact that several cars that were running behind Button when he pulled off – including Carlos Sainz’s Toro Rosso and Sergio Perez’s Force India – ended the day in the points. Former Williams engineer Mark Gillan and Sky F1’s Marc Priestley join Natalie Pinkham at 8.30pm on Wednesday on Sky Sports F1.
