Meanwhile, Trump has insisted since the primaries that he can’t release his tax returns because the IRS is auditing him. He has said he will release them once the audit is over.
Hillary Clinton, who announced her candidacy in April 2015, made $1.48 million from speaking engagements in 2015, a sharp decrease from the almost $10.5 million she generated the year before.
Clinton released her 2015 federal income tax return on Friday in a move to pressure Trump to release his returns.
Over the course of their careers the Clintons have published all of their tax returns since 1977 – Democrats repeatedly point to this as evidence of transparency on the part of the power couple. But the IRS says all taxpayers are free to make their own tax returns public, regardless of any audit. For Trump, the subject may be notably more taxing.
The Trump campaign responded to the release late Friday afternoon, calling for the disclosure of documents related to the Clinton Foundation and Benghazi it said would be more revealing. “There’s no middle-income family that pays 31 percent of their income in income taxes”. Bucking decades of tradition, however, Trump has refused to release his tax returns.
The couple also generated income from book sales and Bill Clinton’s consulting business. Though they were once seen as relatable to average Americans, polls suggest that many voters now see them as out of touch.
Aides say Clinton’s strategy is simple: let Trump be Trump.
The document showed she and her husband reported an income of $10.6m (£8m) in 2015. Bill Clinton earned $225,000 for a February speech sponsored by UBS Wealth Management, for example, and Hillary Clinton gave a speech for eBay in March for $315,000. It will take some time for reporters and other interested parties to dig through them, but the most important thing right now is that Clinton and Kaine are giving everyone the chance to do so.
The financial disclosure from earlier this year said two sources of consulting income were Varkey GEMS Foundation, an worldwide charity founded by Sunny Varkey, the education entrepreneur, and Laureate Education, a network of for-profit schools.
The businessman said the media has misconstrued his words, tweeting: “THEY DON’T GET SARCASM?”
Their deductions included $1.4 million in state income taxes and $98,244 in property taxes on their homes in Chappaqua, New York, and Washington.

Over the last decade, the couple has donated 7.5 per cent of their income to charity, the campaign said, and paid an effective tax rate of 25.6 per cent a year ago.
