Hillary Clinton, husband paid federal tax rate of 34.2 percent, campaign says

According to a campaign statement, the combined federal and state tax rate paid a year ago by Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, amounted to 43.2 percent on a total income of approximately $10.7 million.

The Clinton campaign has used Trump’s refusal to release the documents to raise questions about the candidate’s business dealings, including whether Trump would benefit from the tax plan he pitched during a speech in Detroit on August 8.

One million dollars of the charitable contributions went directly to the Clinton Family Foundation – separate from the Clinton Foundation – which is by the couple. Trump has refused to make his filings public, saying they’re under audit by the Internal Revenue Service and that he’ll release them only once that review is complete. And on Friday, her vice presidential pick, Tim Kaine, followed suit, and released his tax returns for the last decade.

The former secretary of state has appeased the Buffet Rule, a law that she’d like to impose if elected.

Clinton’s previous returns from 2007 through 2014 were already posted on her website. He is to hold separate events on Friday in Erie and Altoona, Pennsylvania.

In 2012, then-Republican presidential Mitt Romney reluctantly released his returns. Obama repeatedly used Romney’s business dealings against him and seized upon the former MA governor’s reluctance to release certain tax records. In 2015, Kaine and his wife, Anne, reported $313,441 in adjusted gross income and paid almost $63,000 in federal income taxes for an effective rate of 20%.

A lower income would undermine his image as a successful businessman.

Recent polls show Clinton leading in most of the battleground states while making surprising inroads in others, like Utah and Georgia, that have been troublesome for Democrats. Over the last nine years, the Clintons have paid $US48 million in federal taxes and given $US16 million to charity. A spokesman for the governor’s office referred all tax-related questions to his vice presidential campaign.

She meant to try to make the case that Mr. Trump’s agenda would benefit him and his wealthy friends, and to characterise his plans as an update of “trickle-down economics”, according to her campaign. Bill spent $500,000 in travel as part of the speaking portion of his business, Hillary had about $250,000 in travel expenses for her speaking business. She commanded her highest rate from EBay, which paid her $315,000 for a March 2015 address in San Jose.

“The records we need to see are those being hidden, deleted, obstructed and stashed away by Hillary Clinton to keep authorities from untangling this corrupt scheme that reaches into the world’s shady corridors of power”, he said.

She also promised to create jobs across multiple industries support unions, small businesses and renewable energy, as well as raising taxes on wealthy individuals and corporations shipping jobs and operations overseas. Several former students have sued a school operated by the company, alleging fraud.

Also in 2010, Bill Clinton was appointed honorary chairman of a nonprofit associated with Gems Education, which is based in Dubai and operates mainly in the Middle East.
