The poll showed that although Trump has a lead among white voters in Florida – 51% to 37% – Clinton benefits from a gender split. Prior to the Monmouth poll being released, Clinton’s advantage in the Real Clear Politics average was just 3.6 percentage points.

Polls show Trump is extremely unpopular among minority voters, an enormous electoral liability for the candidate. On the economy and jobs, 49 percent pick Clinton and 46 percent choose Trump.

Although the anti-immigration statements have won him support from many Republican voters, the newest message seems aimed at winning over others who might be anxious about terrorism, but who have been turned off by the harsh divisiveness of his earlier remarks.

Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks confirms that the campaign will be hitting the airwaves in Florida, Ohio, North Carolina and Pennsylvania – all key states that Trump is hoping to win in November.
