Hillary Clinton maintains slim edge in national poll

Hillary Clinton says she understands how to fight terrorism and is the only candidate running for president who “has been part of the hard decisions to take terrorists off the battlefield”.

The illness kept Democrat Clinton out of the game for much of the week.

Clinton’s doctor too proclaimed her healthy “other than a sinus and ear infection and her recently diagnosed pneumonia” – leaving aside a history of falls and a concussion back in 2012. “It’s news to us”, he said, and Castellanos interrupted: “Oh, I don’t think so”.

Larry Sabato, the political prognosticator at the University of Viriginia’s Center for Politics, frames the contest as a race to the bottom.

Bill Clinton says that out of the hundreds of thousands of donors to the Clinton Foundation over the past 18 years, there must have been some people who gave to the foundation to gain influence with him and his wife.

Clinton and her team see her foreign policy experience as a key selling point for her candidacy. “We expect it to tighten even further – that’s why we built a robust campaign in all 50 states, but especially in the battleground states”, he said.

The events of the past week led the judicious Sabato made his first major changes to his electoral projections since March.

Clinton warned Americans not to get “distracted” by Trump’s “irresponsible, reckless rhetoric” after weekend attacks involving explosives in three cities in NY and New Jersey, as well as the stabbing of nine people in a Minnesota mall.

“Knock the hell out of ’em”, Trump told “Fox and Friends” in a phone interview Monday morning. “But Congress is responsible for making laws in the USA, and our expectation of a divided Congress would limit either president’s room for policy maneuver”, they said.

The big risk for Clinton is that some undecided voters in swing states will be more inclined to get behind Trump if they sense that increasing numbers of voters nationally are ready to bet on him.

Speaking in New Hampshire on Friday, Kaine, a senator and former Virginia governor, put a courageous spin on his circumstances.

The poll found Trump’s “highly unfavorable” score was 42 percent, compared to 33 for Clinton.

In the head-to-head matchup with Clinton, Trump leads up by 1 percentage point.

Trump, meanwhile, has picked up the previously toss-up state of Missouri – the first time the Republican has gained a state in Real Clear’s projections since May. It was the worst stretch of her campaign, and during it, a newly confident Trump for the first time in several weeks began to veer off his written remarks.

However, 293 still is north of the 270 electoral votes needed to win.

Conway also said Sunday that Trump is “moving on to all the things he talked about (last) week” including tax reform and child care tax credits. However, even with those losses, FiveThirtyEight projects a Clinton win in the electoral college victory – 278 to 260.
