IL delegates for Bernie Sanders said Tuesday that speeches by prominent Chicagoans at the Democratic National Convention have helped the party unite behind presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
At the Democratic National Convention on Monday night, many loyal Bernie Sanders supporters were brought to tears as the Vermont senator threw his support behind presumptive Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton.
She will become the official Democratic Party nominee when she gives her acceptance speech at the convention Thursday.
It was a striking parallel to the role Mrs Clinton played eight years ago when she stepped to the microphone on the convention floor in Denver in support of her former rival, Barack Obama.
Tuesday night wasn’t all sweetness and light.
“I move that all votes cast be reflected in the official record and I move that Hillary Clinton is the democratic candidate for President of the United States”.
“They know where to find me”, Venditti said, noting that he would consider returning to the party if Clinton’s candidacy was abandoned.
President from 1993 to 2001, Bill Clinton, 69, left office with high approval ratings and is known as one of the most powerful political orators in the country. You’re entitled to feel a tinge of sadness [but] you should feel incredible that we’ve nominated a woman for the first time ever.
Isabel Baker, an 88-year-old delegate from Oklahoma, was born in 1929, just nine years after women were given the right to vote.
That dramatic moment came instead when Sanders appeared with the Vermont delegation and moved to suspend the rules, calling for a voice vote to make the nomination unanimous.
Several in the state’s delegation praised universal themes and shared values brought up the night before by first lady Michelle Obama, a Chicago native, and U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez, an immigrant rights advocate whose district includes city neighborhoods.
In his prime-time address, Bill Clinton will be capping a day in which Democrats want to showcase Hillary Clinton’s achievements on issues such as women and families, healthcare and as a former secretary of state.
Clinton’s campaign views the four-day convention as an opportunity to introduce her to voters anew.
The stories were being told by a long list of lawmakers, celebrities and advocates. She acknowledged that such an event is unlikely.
