Hillary Clinton puts pressure on Trump by releasing tax returns

Hillary and Bill Clinton earned $10.6 million (about €9.5 million) a year ago, according to a tax filing released by her campaign to pressure presidential rival Donald Trump to disclose his own tax returns.

Yesterday at her economic speech in Warren, Michigan, Clinton continued to press Trump on his tax holdout.

What’s more, the Clintons lowered their tax liability by giving to charity.

Trump has refused to release his tax returns until an audit conducted by a special division known as the “Wealth Squad” of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the US’ tax authority, is completed.

The Republican and Democratic candidates in the last nine presidential elections – since Ronald Reagan in 1980 – have released tax returns at least for the previous year, according to Politifact. A lower income would undermine his image as a successful businessman.

Finally, a tax return could show what kind of financial ties Trump has to foreign countries – including Russian Federation, which has seemingly sought to meddle in the 2016 election through a possible email hack of numerous Democratic campaign entities.

“Here’s a pretty incredible fact: there is a non-zero chance that Donald Trump isn’t paying *any* taxes”, Ms Clinton tweeted, minutes after releasing her own returns.

Clinton’s campaign also released 10 years of years of returns from running mate Tim Kaine and his wife, Anne Holton.

The returns show that the Clintons’ made about $10 million last year, which is a significant drop from the year before, when the duo reported a combined income of about $28 million. He has failed to provide the public with the most basic financial information disclosed by every major candidate in the last 40 years.

In recent years, though, the Clintons’ sources of income brought scrutiny.

“There are no polls showing Hillary Clinton in trouble in New Jersey”, said Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University poll, which also had Clinton in the lead.

Bill Clinton’s consulting work for GEMS Education, a global network of for-profit schools based in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, earned him more than $5.6 million in fees between 2010 and 2015, according to the Clinton tax returns.

The Clintons were expected to release their full 2015 tax return on Friday, adding to eight years of returns that Hillary Clinton’s campaign released last year.
