Hillary Clinton releases tax returns, blasts Trump for not doing so

This latest presidential saga comes at a time when Trump is slipping in the polls. “He’s going to save our country”.

“Your move”, Clinton campaign aide Ian Sams said on Twitter, linking to the Democratic nominee’s returns.

On Friday, NBC News/The Wall Street Journal/Marist released polls for the traditional swing states of Florida, Colorado, North Carolina, and Virginia.

Trump is holding a pair of fundraisers in La Crosse and Milwaukee on Tuesday.

Earlier this week he caused a major stir with comments about the Second Amendment that were perceived as advocating violence against Clinton, then faced questions yet again after declaring Wednesday that President Barack Obama was the “founder” of the Islamic State group – a patently false claim. And House Speaker Paul Ryan will be on a trip with his family. Richard Nixon released his own taxes under audit in 1973, in part because of accusations of tax-dodging that eventually forced the disgraced former president to pay the IRS $476,431 in back taxes.

The Hillary Clinton campaign on Friday released her 2015 tax return, which showed that the Democratic nominee and her husband paid a 34.2-percent effective federal tax rate and donated almost 10 percent of their gross income to charity.

The 2015 tax documents from the Clintons don’t specify which businesses paid the Clintons to speak.

Mrs Clinton’s running mate Tim Kaine has also released his returns for the past 10 years. The Clinton campaign said that the couple has donated 7.5 percent of their adjusted gross income to charity over the past decade.

The Clintons even paid a higher tax rate past year than the average effective federal tax rate of 33.4 percent for the top 1 percent of taxpayers.

Clinton is trying to undercut the trustworthiness of rival Donald Trump. He has refused to disclose any returns, breaking tradition with all recent presidential candidates. Trump has said that he’s under an audit by the Internal Revenue Service and won’t release his returns until that audit is concluded – which may not happen before the November 8 election.

The Clintons paid $3,624,55 in taxes, according to the returns, taking $2,242,022 in itemized deductions and giving $1,042,000 to charity.

“In stark contrast, Donald Trump is hiding behind fake excuses and backtracking on his previous promises to release his tax returns”, Clinton campaign communications director Jennifer Palmieri said.

The next day, Clinton published a column in Salt Lake City’s Deseret News titled “What I have in common with Utah leaders – religious freedom and the Constitution”.

She adds she has “a lot of stamina and endurance which is necessary in the kind of campaign that I’m engaged in”.

A new poll showed Trump, whose unfiltered speaking style has repeatedly landed him in hot water, losing ground in three crucial states ahead of the November 8 general election against Clinton.
