Crump said the window to the SUV was closed, evident by a streak of blood that was left on the window after Crutcher was shot. “Who is ideal? But that night he was not a criminal”, Hall said.
News and video of the shooting spread on social media. He then approaches the driver’s side of his vehicle, where an officer shocks him with a stun gun and another fatally shoots him.
Beyond the police shootings in recent years, what disturbs civil rights activists are how people shot by officers are treated afterward.
Ms Shelby joined the Tulsa Police in 2011 after serving with the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office since 2007.
The officer then told dispatchers that Crutcher was not cooperating.
The Tulsa Police Department on Tuesday claimed it found a vial of PCP in Terence Crutcher’s van on the night that he was fatally shot by police officers.
The Tulsa Police Department confirmed, on Tuesday, PCP was found inside Crutcher’s vehicle.
A separate police dash cam video also shows the officer with a weapon drawn and following Crutcher as he walks to his vehicle with his hands in the air.
At a press conference on Monday, Chief Chuck Jordan explained that the video was “very disturbing – very hard to watch”.
Family attorney Melvin Hall said Crutcher posed no threat to the officers.
Within seconds, Crutcher is apparently hit by the Taser and Shelby’s fatal shot.
Tulsa Police Sgt. Shane Tuell tells The Associated Press that officer Betty Shelby was certified on the use of stun guns.
Police Chief Chuck Jordan said Monday that Crutcher had no weapon on him or in his SUV when he was shot.
Police say Crutcher did not have a weapon on him or in his SUV.
Wood, who did not immediately respond to a request for comment from USA Today, told World that Crutcher reached toward or into his pockets several times despite Shelby ordering him not to do so. Please sign and share this Care2 petition if you agree that no one deserves to die simply because an officer thinks they look like “a bad dude”. Crutcher’s family and protesters have called for her arrest on murder charges.
The police chief had said that no weapons were found in the vehicle or on Crutcher and following the backlash has asked the Justice Department to investigate the incident.
Crump called for Shelby to be held accountable for her actions.
On Tuesday, the Tulsa police declined to comment on whether Crutcher had been reaching inside the vehicle. “We saw that Terence was not being belligerent”.
Betty Shelby’s mother-in-law said the officer is not guilty of wrongdoing, and called for sympathy from others for the pain suffered by the Shelby family. Celebrities have been reacting to the news of Crutcher’s death across the web today.
The family’s lawyers, who include Benjamin Crump, who represented the relatives of Michael Brown, the unarmed black teenager who was killed in 2014 by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, challenged Wood’s account.
Crutcher, a 40 year old Father, was unarmed. Tulsa police say Crutcher didn’t have a gun.
He said the confrontation had been under way for nearly two minutes before the videos began to record. Scott, a disabled father of seven, was reportedly unarmed – witnesses say that Scott was in his auto reading a book at the time of the incident.
John Bostain, a former police officer in Virginia, now trains law enforcement as co-owner of Command Presence Training Associates. He says Shelby opened fire and another officer used a stun gun when Crutcher’s “left hand goes through the auto window”.
The U.S. Department of Justice and the state authorities in Oklahoma have launched investigations into the shooting.
Crutcher can be seen dropping to the ground. Calling the act “unbearable” and saying officer-involved shootings “need to be intolerable”, Clinton appealed to a white audience to address unconscious discrimination.
