Hillary Clinton’s Night at the Convention

“I think her strongest trait, even with some Americans who don’t like her very much, is that she’s tough”, said Brad Bannon, a Democratic strategist.

“With Hillary Clinton as our commander-in-chief the United States will continue to be that indispensable, transformational power in the world”, Gen. John Allen said.

“I am watching Crooked Hillary speak”, Trump tweeted during Clinton’s remarks. “But I’m here to tell you tonight -“.

Mrs Clinton embraced her reputation as a policy wonk, offering a litany of proposals for tuition-free college, infrastructure investment, immigration reform, gun control, affordable child care, paid family leave and more. Trump countered all her attacks saying that Clinton had the “worst judgement”. “It’s not just a detail if it’s your kid, or if it’s your family, it’s a big deal, and it should be a big deal to your president”, she said.

“He wants to divide us – from the rest of the world and from each other”, the Democratic nominee said of her Republican opponent in her speech closing the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia Thursday night.

She said Americans were willing to work, and work hard, but right now, “an terrible lot of people feel there is less and less respect for the work they do”. “I will be a President for Democrats, Republicans, and Independents”.

The long-running scandal over Clinton’s use of a private e-mail server while she was secretary of state has been a major distraction for her campaign, and Republicans have sought to paint her as careless and a liar.

“I get it that some people just don’t know what to make of me”, she said.

That included Sanders’s seemingly stubborn supporters.

Clinton and Trump are essentially tied in OH, where the Republicans held their convention last week, according to an average of polls by RealClearPolitics.

“The charge comes after Melania Trump was criticised for lifting significant portions of her address to the convention from Michelle’s first convention speech in 2008”.

Donald Trump isn’t known for the generosity of his criticism.

Clinton has also geared her economic policy to appeal to working-class white men, who usually lean Republican, and in her speech on Thursday night, she acknowledged Americans’ frustration, especially those in the working class, with economic problems exacerbated by the recession.

“Donald Trump says, ‘I know more about this than the generals do, ‘” she told the audience of Trump’s plan to fight ISIS after she explained the four specific steps she would take as president to defeat terrorists. Andrew Cuomo also noted that NY adopted marriage equality not because the Supreme Court said it had to but because it was the right thing to do.

By contrast, at last week’s Republican convention, no former Republican presidents spoke or even attended the event, underscoring how uneasy many Republicans are with Trump’s brash style, outsized personality, and lack of experience.

Trump and Clinton will face each for the first time on September 26 in the first of several presidential debates before Election Day on November 8. Clinton, 68, portrayed Trump, 70, as a threat to the country, saying “a man you can bait with a tweet is not a man we can trust with nuclear weapons”.

Mike Murphy, a veteran GOP operative who also ran Jeb Bush’s super PAC during his presidential campaign thought little of the speech and Clinton’s delivery but praised the message.

The convention provided hours of glowing tributes, including deeply personal testimonials from her husband, former President Bill Clinton, and former boss, President Barack Obama.
