Clinton campaign aides say she is considering a vice presidential running mate with national security experience, a factor that has sharpened the focus on former NATO Supreme Allied Commander James Stavridis, who now is dean of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, a graduate school for global affairs. Asked about his appearance Thursday on Clinton’s official Instagram account, Booker said it should not be read as tea leaves about a potential vice presidential pick.
“Thanks, Mark!” Kaine said, smiling and slightly squirming in his chair on stage. “I look at it and I think, wait a second, I started out life in an orphanage”.
“Hillary Clinton’s vice-presidential pick will be seen by many as a proxy for how she will govern – boldly, or cautiously?” said Stephanie Taylor, a co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee.
Stavridis worked closely with Clinton when he was at North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and she led the State Department during Obama’s first term. “I guess all I can tell you is I went through the process in 2008, so I kind of know the rhythm of it and I’m glad that I do”, he said.
On Tuesday, Hickenlooper declined to answer questions about his meeting with Clinton or his chances for getting the vice presidential nod. Voters tend to focus on the top of the ticket, but Mr. Kaine could offer a political boost for the Clinton campaign.
A spokesman for Bernie Sanders said Thursday that when the senator from Vermont addresses the Democratic convention, he plans to echo numerous themes he touched upon last week during a rally in New Hampshire at which he formally endorsed Hillary Clinton.
He acknowledges that there are “a lot of qualified people who could fill the role”.
“Her top criterion will be picking someone who is ready to be President”. Pleasant, Iowa, the small town where his political career was launched in the 1980s by accident. The state’s strong economy and low unemployment boost his resume, as does his image as a positive campaigner.
After praising the partnership as secretary of state, Mrs. Clinton has recently said as a candidate, “I don’t believe it’s going to meet the high bar I’ve set” on protecting USA workers, the environment and other issues.
Kaine is a more moderate Democrat than Clinton’s other options. “I’m gonna be looking, first and foremost, as to who I believe could fulfill the responsibilities of being president and commander in chief”.

Clinton praised several candidates, saying she has the “blessing of having some excellent choices”. Clinton’s chief rival for the Democratic nomination, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, has headed the effort on the US left to oppose the TPP and trade deals like it.
