Clinton is not a target, McClatchy, which broke the story, reported.
A new Public Policy Polling survey out Tuesday showed Clinton losing to four Republican candidates in Iowa.
Clinton’s use of her private email for her work as America’s top diplomat came to light in March and drew fire from political opponents who accused her of sidestepping transparency and record-keeping laws. She has also stated that she would not relinquish her server, despite calls from Republican lawmakers to turn it over to an independent third-party.
Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-La.) jumped on today’s news, stating that Clinton’s “one email away from prison time“. It’s likely that voices there have been saying for some time that Kendall ought not to be in possession of Clinton’s emails and that they should be turned over forthwith. The personal emails of 6 other aides also have been requested.
But it’s not clear that’s being done.
John Kirby, a spokesman for the State Department, said that was the case with the two emails highlighted by Grassley, adding that it remained unclear “whether, in fact, this material is actually classified”.
“Politically, it’s a no-win situation for her”, Bloomberg’s Mark Halperin said. The State Department has provided records to its Inspector General.
Why didn’t the State Department provide the security at the consulate as the ambassador demanded? “Her mishandling of classified information must be fully investigated”.
Clinton this week unveiled a $350 billion plan to address higher education costs, in part by encouraging more state and federal spending, making it easier for students to refinance loans and capping loan payments based on their incomes. Neither he nor the lawyers who work with him have security clearances.
Clinton has already handed over thousands of emails to the State Department in March this year and last December, which are under review. Still, further investigation may yet turn up more emails where they shouldn’t be.
Clinton’s use of her personal email server has dogged her since even before she entered the presidential race, and some Democrats have anxious that it has contributed to her fledgling poll numbers on trustworthiness. She claimed she used it out of convenience to limit the amount of electronic devices she had to carry.
SIEGEL: As she campaigns in New Hampshire, apart from reporters, do voters ask her about the email server? Her attorneys planned to keep a copy.
I doubt that these concerns have only just surfaced at the Department of Justice.
Reines and Sullivan did not respond to messages nor did attorneys for Mills and Abedin.
While Clinton turned over the emails she deemed work-related, she deleted a similar amount that her team said were strictly personal.
The committee is investigating the 2012 Benghazi attacks and has taken interest in emails about the incident that may be on Clinton’s server. Two others are under review for final classification.
On Tuesday, the inspector general for the Intelligence Community notified senior members of Congress that two of four classified emails discovered on the Clinton server contained material deemed to be “Top Secret” – one of the highest security classifications and more sensitive than previously had been known. The department is reviewing those emails and has begun the process of releasing them to the public.
Merrill said in the meantime, Clinton’s team “has worked with the State Department to ensure her emails are stored in a safe and secure manner”.
