Hillary Clinton wins Illinois Democratic primary

In the Democratic race, Mrs Clinton won at least four states, dealing a severe blow to contender Bernie Sanders.

Glickman speculated, however, that the most serious outcome of Kasich’s victory was its effect on the Trump campaign.

Rubio continually tried to cast himself as the statesman alternative to the bombastic Trump who could unite a fractured Republican party.

The only reason Rubio stayed in this long was to keep Trump from winning Florida, and he failed miserably at that.

Clinton, meanwhile, swept the night with apparent wins in IL and Missouri and projected victories in the Democratic North Carolina and OH contests, NBC News reported. He told a victory rally in Florida: “This was an fantastic night”.

With a win over Trump in Ohio, Kasich’s supporters said they can see the governor giving the real estate mogul a run for his money.

“We have to bring our party together”, a restrained Trump, 69, said in Palm Beach, Florida, as the results rolled in.

The Ohio primary was his first victory of the 2016 Republican race for presidential candidacy. The result could be a contested convention, creating an unpredictable outcome. Polls had them tied or Kasich ahead, but only by a little. On the other hand, 46 percent of Clinton voters said they’d be dissatisfied if the senator from Vermont wins. He did not mention Kasich by name. He had no mathematical pathway to the nomination and ended the night with only a handful more delegates than he began it. “There are not enough delegates for (Kasich) to get the nomination”.

Mr Rubio implicitly rebuked the front-runner throughout a speech in Miami announcing he was dropping out of the race, imploring Americans to “not give in to the fear, do not give in to the frustration”.

The wins for Clinton added to her lead of more than 200 pledged delegates over Sanders and will give her an nearly insurmountable lead over the self-described democratic socialist. But it really wasn’t that great for a candidate who had made five campaign stops in Illinois Monday, only to see Trump win the state handily.

Speaking to supporters in Florida Mrs Clinton took the opportunity to take a swipe at her Republican rival.

Correspondents say Clinton reaffirmed her lead on Tuesday after Sanders pulled off a major political upset with his win in MI a week earlier.

The former Secretary of State now has 1,561 delegates as against 800 of her rival Sanders.

The Associated Press has not declared a victor in either race. “Our Commander-in-Chief has to be able to defend our country, not embarrass it; engage our allies, not alienate them; defeat our adversaries; not embolden them”, she said.
