Hip Hop Musical “Hamilton” Dominates At Tony Awards

Immediately following his speech, celebrities took to Twitter to express their appreciation for Lin’s artistic perspective on the tragic shooting that took the lives of 49 people just hours earlier. The show began on a somber note, with a message from host James Corden. “On behalf of the whole theater community and every person in this room, our hearts go out to all of those affected by this atrocity”. Your tragedy is our tragedy. “Theater is a place where every race, creed, sexuality, and gender is equal, is embraced, and is loved”.

“Hate will never win”, he continued. “Tonight’s show stands as a symbol and a celebration of that principle”.

Just like previous year, two of the night’s biggest winners – “Hamilton” and “The Humans” – began on small stages in nonprofit theaters.

Attendees were given silver pins, worn in remembrance of the Orlando victims. Leslie Odom Jr won Best Leading Actor in a Musical against his Hamilton co-star, who also wrote the musical, Lin-Manuel Miranda, for his role as former American vice president Aaron Burr. There were several moments when actors brought attention to what we now know is the deadliest shooting in our nation’s history.

“We chase the melodies that seem to find us until they’re finished songs and start to play when senseless acts of tragedy remind us that nothing here is promised, not one day”, the playwright said.

The world has become obsessed with hip-hop musical Hamilton, with endless sold out shows, tributes from across the music industry, live performances on talk shows and beyond.

Thank you so much for this. (Though the musical had a record-breaking 16 nominations, The Producers still holds the title for most wins with 12.) Introduced by the Obamas themselves, the performance was essentially a showcase for the remarkable performers and an incentive to see the perpetually sold-out musical if you haven’t already. “Today in Orlando we had a ugly dose of reality”.
