The mayor quoted part of President Obama’s speech in his May visit to Hiroshima in which he said that nations, like the United States, that hold nuclear stockpiles, must have courage to put fear behind them, so that in the end, everyone could live in a nuclear free world.

Obama is the first sitting US president to visit the bomb site.

“In May, for the first time, as US President, Barack Obama visited Hiroshima”. He did not offer an apology for the bombing. Last year, Isaacs said upwards of 40 people participated.

By the end of the year, the combined death toll reached 220,000 and thousands more would die from injuries and radiation in the following years.

Many young people, who did not grow up in the shadow of World War II or during the Cold War don’t understand the threat of nuclear weapons, said Cohen-Odiaga, a coordinator of Global Zero Boston, the group that organized the Sunday bike ride. “We need to think about the future, we need to concentrate all our powers on creating a world without nuclear weapons”, Tsuboi said.

“A lot of nuclear weapons were accumulated during the Cold War, enough for half a million Hiroshimas, threatening to destroy all life on Earth”.

Since Obama went to Hiroshima, the park and accompanying memorial museum have witnessed an increase in visitors.

The average age of the survivors is now over 80.

All hibakusha, or survivors of the 1945 atomic bombings, have become old, Mimaki said, adding that he wants nuclear nations to lead the way to establish how to eliminate nuclear weapons from the world and put that into action. In his latest Cabinet reshuffle, Abe appointed nationalist confidante Tomomi Inada as defence minister.
