HISD automated phone call notifies parents of school threats

Former Los Angeles Police Chief William J. Bratton, who is now a Commissioner of the New York City Police, said that the response shown by LA officials is a flawless example of overreaction.

The email ending encouraged the LAUSD to pray to Allah.

“I have no sympathy with the attacker”, Canfield wrote, “but if a few emails from my meme email provider can shut down your [school district], that’s an administration problem”.

Los Angeles shut down all of its schools on Tuesday after officials reported receiving a threat involving backpacks and packages and ordered a search of all schools.

“It’s due to circumstances in neighboring San Bernardino …”

Cortines said the threat was rare, considering the many threats the districts receives daily.

It’s also unclear how much money Los Angeles lost from the estimated high number of parents who may have missed work to care for their children.

“I have asked state Schools Superintendent Tom Torlakson to allow us to count [Tuesday] as an instructional day and reimburse the District for funds we will otherwise lose”, Superintendent Cortines said. NY quickly dismissed the warning as a hoax, and its schools remained open.

“We’ve compared it to those that were received on Tuesday to Los Angeles and NY and the language is very similar to those”, Spencer said.

With crisis counselors available for those wanting to talk about the incident, more than 640,000 students returned to their schools Wednesday following a day of uncertainty and a degree of chaos.

“We believe that our schools are safe,”school board President Steve Zimmer said at a news conference late Tuesday afternoon”.

In Houston, officials said law enforcement officers were making sweeps of school district buildings to ensure student safety.

Towards the end of the threat, the emailer mentioned taking terror to other Southern California cities including San Diego should officials attempt to close schools. In addition, the email said they would use Kalashnikov rifles, Glock 18 machine pistols, grenades, and nerve gas in the attack.

“It is very easy in hindsight to criticise the decision based on results that the decider could never have known”, Beck said.

A spokeswoman for the Federal Bureau of Investigation said her agency has not made any arrests or filed any charges in the case so far.

Students already at school were sent home, officials said, and families scrambled to come up with plans after the last-minute closure.

The message also said the person boasted of having “32 accomplices… all ready to take action today”, Sherman said.

“I have been around long enough to know that usually what people think in the first few hours is not what plays out in later hours”, said mayor Garcetti.

The closure came the same day classes were canceled at San Bernardino Valley College because of a bomb threat.

In a statement on its website, the Houston Independent School District said police were sweeping campuses as a precaution, but the threat did not appear to be credible.
